In contact with areas influenced by the ocean to the West, and areas
influenced by the Mediterranean to the East, the climate can vary
greatly from one point to another within this large region.
The climate of Somontano is characterised by cold winters and warm
summers, with rapid changes in temperature at the end of Spring and
Autumn. The average annual temperature is around 11 degrees
centigrade.
The rain comes down from the North to the South and across from the
West to the East, and this, along with the higher temperatures,
leads to an increased need in some areas for vines to be irrigated.
Average annual rainfall is around 500 millimetres.
The French part is characterised by great contrasts. In the South,
in the area close to the Séanish border, the temperatures are low
and can even drop below 0 ºC. In summer, the temperature varies
between 20 ºC and 22 °C in the North, 18 ºC and 20 °C in the
centre of the region and is lower in the South, falling below 16
°C. In addition, rainfall levels are very variable: in the North,
rainfall is relatively moderate, even below the 600 mm a year
recorded in Garona valley to the South of Toulouse. However, the dry
summers often end with storms.
