The project called “Valuing the wines and lands of the
Central Pyrenees", run by the Interprofessional Committee for Wines
from the South-West of France (IVSO) and the Denomination of Origin
Somontano Regulating Council, has a budget of €2,433,210 to carry
out promotion activities over the 2008 to 2010 period, all within
the scope of the Interreg Project.
The Operational Programme for Spain-France-Andorra (POCTEFA)
2007-2013, in the context of which this new project is taking place,
is financed with a total estimated budget of €168m, received from
the European Regional Development Fund (Feder) and the promotion
agencies. The maximum subsidy percentage that will be given to the
initiatives designed by D.O. Somontano and the IVSO is 65%.
This is the second project with these characteristics in the history
of D.O. Somontano and the only one which has been granted in the
Autonomous Community of Aragon because of the cross-border nature of
Somontano and the South-West of France.
These funds guarantee that the Somontano Wine Festival can continue
until at least 2010 within the framework of a programme for
promoting the two areas. This programme also includes similar
festivals in Gaillac, Madiran and Fronton, under the common title of
Festivals for Wine from the Central Pyrenees. One of the main
features of the programme is the promotion of the wines in other
Member States, which in the case of Somontano will be centred on
Germany and England as the main potential export markets, as
reported by Beroz.
In South-West France there are 18 Denominations of Origin, while on
this side of the Pyrenees there is only Somontano, with its 4,000
hectares, "as a result of which the activity could have a very
significant impact".
In comparable situations “the fee revenue for D.O. Somontano never
reaches €500,000 a year and this only allows for payment of the
infrastructure, personnel and operations, but there is not enough
for the very necessary promotion activities.”
Of the total of €2,433,210, D.O. Somontano will implement
initiatives costing €1,363,450 over three years. The breakdown is:
coordination, €53,650; appreciation of the wine and lands, €980,000;
"lutte raisonnee" (reasonable pest control), €38,400; promotion of
the wines and lands, communication and publicity for the project,
€284,000; and evaluation, €7,400.
The IVSO will spend €1,069,760 over three years. The breakdown is;
coordination, €53,410; appreciation of the wine and lands, €691,906;
"lutte raisonnee" (reasonable pest control), €70,008; Promotion of
the wines and lands, communication and publicity for the project,
€247,022; and evaluation, €7,414.
